This summer, audiences are invited to leave the ordinary behind and venture into a world of talking donkeys, fire-breathing dragons, fairy tale misfits, and one lovable ogre as Stages Theatre Company presents Shrek The Musical, running June 20 through August 2, 2026 on the Mainstage Theatre.

Based on the beloved DreamWorks Animation film and the book by William Steig, Shrek The Musical features a Tony Award-winning score by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Packed with humor, heart, and larger-than-life characters, the musical transforms the familiar fairy tale into a celebration of friendship, acceptance, and discovering what truly makes us special.

Directed by Artistic Director Sandy Boren-Barrett, Stages Theatre Company's production combines professional production values with the energy and talent of young performers, creating a theatrical experience designed to delight audiences of all ages.

"Shrek is one of those rare stories that genuinely has something for everyone," said Sandy. "Children will love the adventure, the comedy, and seeing their favorite fairy tale characters come to life. Adults will appreciate the humor, the music, and the deeper message about belonging and accepting ourselves and others. It's joyful, funny, and surprisingly moving."

Audiences can expect colorful costumes, imaginative scenery, memorable songs, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona embark on an unforgettable journey. Along the way, they encounter a cast of fairy tale characters who discover that being different isn't something to hide—it's something to celebrate.

At a time when many families are looking for shared experiences that bring generations together, Shrek The Musical offers an opportunity to unplug, laugh, and connect through live theatre. With its themes of friendship, self-confidence, and embracing individuality, the story resonates with children and adults alike. Whether audiences are longtime fans of the film (it’s celebrating its 25th anniversary this year!) or experiencing the story for the first time, Shrek The Musical promises an entertaining summer outing filled with adventure, music, and heart.

Shrek The Musical runs approximately 75 minutes and is recommended for all ages.
