Stages Theatre Company’s The Right Thing to Do: The Joe Mauer
Story Inspires Audiences — and Earns a Visit from Joe Mauer Himself
Now – May 10, 2026 | When doing the right thing is the simplest choice.
There's a new “feel-good, home-run hit musical” lighting up the stage at Stages Theatre Company—and the buzz is building fast. The Right Thing to Do: The Joe Mauer Story is connecting with audiences in a big way… and this week, it welcomed very special guests and inspiration for the book: Minnesota Twins legend Joe Mauer and Mike Halley.
Now playing through May 10, 2026, this world-premiere musical is based on the beloved book by Joe Schmit, with book and music by Stages Theatre Company alumnus Michael Mahler and directed by Sandy Boren-Barrett. The production blends vibrant music, heartfelt storytelling, and a universal message that resonates across generations.
Excitement around the show continues to grow as audiences and artists alike celebrate a story rooted in kindness, humility, and doing the right thing—even when it’s not the easiest choice. Created as a “feel-good, home-run musical,” the show features music that began as early demo recordings by Mahler—now fully realized on stage by a talented cast of young artists. Audiences are especially responding to its uplifting spirit, with moments that remind us, “When the world needs kindness, it starts with each of us.”
“The show took the book to the next level! Wonderful performance by the actors,” shared one audience member. Another called it “such a feel-good experience,” praising the authenticity and relatability of the young performers.
Many have highlighted the musical’s lasting impact, noting that its catchy songs and heartfelt storytelling “carry a powerful yet simple message of kindness.” One attendee reflected, “I left the show feeling as if we can all do better… extending and sharing kindness beyond our friends and family.”
With a 60-minute runtime and recommended for all ages, The Right Thing to Do: The Joe Mauer Story is the perfect outing for families, classrooms, and anyone looking for an uplifting theatrical experience.
Looking ahead, audiences can also anticipate more from composer Michael Mahler, as Stages Theatre Company continues its collaboration with him in the upcoming season production of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Don’t miss your chance to experience this inspiring new musical that reminds us all how small acts can make a big difference.
